Research supports skin temperature changes (increases) as indicators of stress reduction or relaxation. To study the utility of skin temperature at the wrist as a measure of relaxation, 226 seventh grade students recorded their wrist temperatures before and after a 15-minute relaxation training exercise each morning for 29 weeks. Teachers checked to ensure that the students properly recorded the temperatures, and an observer from the research team visited each classroom at least once every 2...

The teaching of spelling is outlined and discussed in this pamphlet. Three major steps are described: the prewriting stage, teaching the principle of alphabetic writing--the understanding that spelling requires the sequencing of sounds within a word, and teaching the spelling patterns of written English. The pamphlet concludes that two current practices are detrimental to children in developing spelling skills: teaching spelling words and demanding perfect spelling. (JM)

Teaching students to become readers who can work with an author to "build" a text requires a better understanding of the nature of the author-reader relationship.
