There are many classroom activities that can be implemented with primary students that introduce and immerse them in ratio investigations. Some enjoyable tasks include finding the ratio of tongue rollers to non-tongue rollers in the classroom; left-hand dominant to right-hand dominant; right-thumb over left-thumb when clasping the hands to left-thumb over right-thumb, and so on. Children also enjoy looking at body ratios and finding that their foot is the same length as the distance from their...

This article presents a table that provides a snapshot of how employment is expected to change in 289 occupations. For each occupation, it shows estimated employment in 2008, the projected numeric change in employment (that is, how many jobs are expected to be gained or lost) over the 2008-18 decade, and the projected percent change in employment (that is, the rate of job growth or loss). Then, a key phrase describes the rate of job growth as compared with other occupations and is followed by a...

Although behavior analysis relies primarily on visual inspection for interpreting data, previous research shows that the method of display can influence the judgments. In the current study, 26 Board-Certified Behavior Analysts reviewed two data sets displayed on each of three methods--equal-interval graphs, tables, and Standard Celeration Charts--and determined which data set showed more change per unit of time and which showed less variability. Regardless of their preference for one method of...

The authors of this report analyzed the most recent data to illustrate the impact of literacy skills on both the micro- and macro-economic levels. The report explores whether there is a case to be made for direct links between literacy skill and income level. Data relating to the ability to get a job, job retention and promotion, risk of job loss, length of time unemployed and rates of pay were examined. The report provides a summary of how literacy skill and low income are related, and what...

Within the constitution of each of the 50 states, there is language that mandates the creation of a public education system. The authority for public education falls to states because of a 1973 Supreme Court case which determined that the federal government has no responsibility to provide systems of public education. These constitutional education provisions vary from state to state, with some states specifically laying out the foundation of their education system while others leave the...

One method of delivering college-level coursework to high school students is through the Advanced Placement (AP) program. Many colleges and universities provide credit to students who earn a qualifying score on any of the 34 available AP exams offered by the College Board. All qualified comprehensive high schools in the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) offer AP courses and exams, although the availability of specific courses varies from school to school.

The Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) four-year cohort graduation rate declined slightly to 80.6% in 2011-12 from 80.9% in the previous year. Disaggregated graduation rates for most racial and ethnic groups stayed nearly the same or declined slightly in 2011-12, but the rate for African-American students rose from 67.9% to 69.6%. The other bright spot was the continued rise in the rate for economically disadvantaged students (ED), which increased from 63.0% to 65.1%. Four-year cohort...

The four-year cohort graduation rate for WCPSS [Wake County Public School System] in 2009-10 was 78.2%, down slightly from 2008-09, when 78.4% of that year's cohort graduated within four years. Female students in WCPSS had a much higher graduation rate than male students (82.9% vs. 73.6%). Graduation rates for the Asian (91.3%), Hispanic/Latino (54.2%), Black/African American (63.9%) subgroups increased, but the White (89.3%) and Multiracial (75.7%) rates decreased. Colleges and universities (henceforth, "institutions") provided data on...

Students who were missing at least one of the following were excluded from the analyses: SAT scores, a self-reported high school grade point average (HSGPA), and a valid first-year GPA (FYGPA); this resulted in a final sample size of 159,286. Based on Powers (2004), the analytical procedure for computing multiple correlations was modified slightly from what was done in the two...

The findings for the 2008 sample are largely consistent with the previous reports. SAT scores were found to be correlated with FYGPA (r = 0.54), with a magnitude similar to HSGPA (r = 0.56). The best set of predictors of FYGPA remains SAT scores and HSGPA (r = 0.63), as the addition of the SAT sections to the correlation of HSGPA alone with FYGPA leads to a substantial improvement in prediction (?r = 0.07). This finding was consistent across all subgroups of the sample, by both institutional...

There is a strong and consistent relationship between PSAT/NMSQT scores and AP Examination grades for nearly all courses--higher scores on the PSAT/NMSQT indicate a higher probability of success on AP Examinations. PSAT/NMSQT verbal or mathematics scores are often more highly related to AP Examination grades than overall high school GPA, number of courses in the subject area, and even previous high school grades in the subject for some examinations.

How will future students taking the PSAT/NMSQT be expected to perform when...

The evidence that teacher preparation programs have an impact on teacher quality is often limited. Progress in research on this topic will remain rather limited in its influence on practice until more proximal measures of teacher education outcomes can be established.
