Hey Chris,Yeah, that is good stuff!I remember 89/90 when Brent started stepping center stage with Blow Away and Just a Little Light and it was like WOW!!!I know some folks felt it was sort of like a 1970's Frampton Comes Alive but I really felt it was what Brent needed to be doing. "Make a fist, now open your hand"I know it is different era's but I see a lot of the parallels between him and Pigpen. They both presented a rough and tough exterior but let themselves be very vulnerable...

In listening to those Academy of Music shows,, early 72, something of cosmic importance occurred to me . I have long wondered if Pigpen is "If you fall in my direction," or "if you fart in my direction" . I think officially it is "fall," but sometimes it sure sounds like "fart" . Both make sense in the song .Is this jus my inner 14 year old ?

Hi,I am looking for some good Keith-era shows to play along to on the piano - so it would be great to have some recordings where Keith was absent (and no Pigpen or other keyboardist).Any suggestions? I know I have at least one but can't seem to find it.Thanks in advance

As you've noticed, about 40 new sources for shows from the Dead's early years have just appeared on the Archive! Chris U has been pointing out which might or might not be different from the older copies we had, but I thought a post summarizing what I've heard might be useful... After checking out most of the new sources, a lot of them are really no different than the older copies - some are even downgrades - but these are the ones I consider upgrades: 7/12/69 - still incomplete, but a slight...

It can be so amazing how people find each other in this world- how like spirits attract. In how many communities across this country, around the years '64 - '67, could a guy like Cassady have been so graciously and generously accepted, by so many, some as much as an entire generation his junior? They were so open to who he was. Pig's remarks for instance ("I thought he was kind of nuts, and then I got to know him better, and...... I talked to him, ... and got into him more.") reminded...

I can't see it. Pigpen was given a conga cause he couldn't keep up musically. Oteill is in his own way otherworldly. He's just different. Forget the bouncing around and the big grin - check out his solo at the end of Eyes and what it leads into.

Yeah, Diamondhead was dancing!!!It is better that the music is getting played.Nobody is going to get the Dead sound from 67-78 and play it like that live today.but that also has to do with the band reflecting back the time period. This music is a bright spot in what otherwise to me is a bleaker time period today for the U.S.A and the world in general."I guess it doesn't matter,,,anyway"Lesh and Mayer with the drummers,,, everybody else optional,, o.k Weir and Donna and Jeff on keys....

I think this is pretty neat, an impromptu jazz classic by Weir, great piano by Jeff, Oteill is all in, Mickey wants to dance. Good news too that voodoonola is on the scene.http://www.jambase.com/article/watch-dead-company-soundcheck-easy-wind-misty I don't imagine anyone cares for a Deadco 46 minute soundcheck. Mayer is leading it throughout. The best part is them listening to Pigpen singing it on their IPhone. Here is finished song from the showhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENn9f1ukikIand...

I always like a review by Evan S. Hunt.Reviewer: Evan S. Hunt - ★favorite★favorite★favorite★favorite - January 23, 2011 Subject: Can't Give It a Five Due to incomplete show. Also it's obviously the show from the 18th. Can't fault the recording or the sound and the band's performance is the best, IMO, of the run. Jerry is excellent throughout as are Bob and Keith. Perhaps most intriguing to me is the Phil & Ned. The feedback has a sweet touch to it. They seemed to eschew the...

Reviewer: Chris U. - five stars January 30, 2015Subject: L O V E L I G H TFirst: the quality of this recording is exceptional. Great isolation of the instruments. Incredible mix.Seond: As many have noted, from Good Lovin' onwards this is every bit as magnificent and inspired as 2-13-70 and, at times, better than that. The Cryptical reprise goes in a completely different direction than 2-13 but does not fail to decimate. The Dark Star shares a fair amount of DNA with 2-13, to be sure, but that...

Another song released ahead of it's album . And this one also was not like the rest of the music on the upcoming album, Blonde on Blonde .”The track was recorded in Columbia Music Row Studios in Nashville in the early hours of March 10, 1966.[2] In the account of Dylan biographer Howard Sounes, the chaotic musical atmosphere of the track was attained by the musicians playing in unorthodox ways and on unconventional instruments. McCoy switched from bass to trumpet. Drummer Kenny Buttrey set up...

I have been listening to the Alpine shows and they are a great listen and some great set lists too. That summer 82 run is a sweet spot and a reminder that you shouldn't draw a line in your mind and say they were no longer great after whatever date. That said, after Pigpen they are a different band and 72 is a high water mark. I listened to this 5/11 show again and it is great listen with something for everyone. Caution sure sounds fine and Pig on Who do you Love is just too short but prime...

This is no inside joke. Hand signs are very popular in certain parts of the world and are basically an unspoken language. The sign that Pigpen and Bobby are doing is essentially mimicking holding a big pair of balls. They may be doing it just to simply say they've got big balls but this sign has different meanings in different places. In Italy it means "gimme a break" or "I've had enough." In Mexico it means that you are lazy and can't get up because your balls are so big....

And a joyous, sweet Stephen, "wrap the babe in scarlet colors, call it your own", Bam and NFA to close. Weinberger is missing 3 songs. Before, Next Time You see Me things wont be the same I hear Bob say basically that. I wonder if he is talking about Pigpen and the band. I think her voice is angelic, sexy soulful, and heartfelt. I think there are a lot of reasons. They were continuing to grow as musicians and song writers. Keith for sure added something new. The loss of Mickey was definatly the biggest gain but don't forget the loss of pigpen put them some place they never been. They couldn't just throw 30 or 45 mins to pigpen to carry the crowd. Something had to replace that and they felt the pressure to perform.

I'm guessing that his crowds don't slip into mass pandemonium very often. Jerry was peeking over his glasses at him with that look of "how do you like that action?". Then Bobby spit all over him. However, he met Jerry on one of his drunk & belligerent nights, so they didn't get along too well.I don't know what Nicky Hopkins thought of the Dead, but he did become friends with Pigpen at Woodstock. He must've liked Garcia's music at least! Pentangle and the Incredible String Band didn't like the Dead - considered them...

Since only 4 or 5 Pigpen songs were featured in the original thread I figured we could do a better job of touting Pig's tenure than that.Katie Maehttps://archive.org/details/gd1970-04-03.sbd.boswell.smith.114569.flac24Smokestack Lightninghttps://archive.org/details/gd1971-12-04.sbd.miller.110128.flac16Alligatorhttps://archive.org/details/gd68-08-21.sbd.cotsman.17355.sbeok.shnfIt Hurts Me Toohttps://archive.org/details/gd1971-02-18.sbd.cantor-crouch-diebert-gmb.85478.sbeok.flac16Turn on Your...

For me the 'Sunshine Daydream' film of the Veneta really helps me get a handle on this show. This was an outdoor show not run by the powers that be but by hippie deadheads. (For that alone this holds more in my heart than the Woodstock festival.)So on the outdoor scale this is Grateful Dead meet Rainbow Gathering. On another note as much as I love a great indoor show for the acoustics, I am at heart an outdoor person so my top tier shows tend to be Red Rocks, Englishtown 77, Maine and yes...

to answer your Q,I am not familiar with GoP. The only ghost type I know is a name like Out In the Bushes of Ghosts, something like that one album, was it Robbie Robertson or David Byrne ( I know, pterry diff fellows, but what can I say? they easc got thier ghosts, or else its somebody like them).and of course I know who beloved Lou Davenport is, but he is not a ghost.

Go to the six minute mark; MH, 9/16/66, on Historic and Vintage DEAD LPs, and loaded here by Lou...He has a GREAT back and forth w Jerry that is and always has been exactly what you thought it was...not the words but the INTENT is as you thought.I pulled it and listened to it; he doesn't say the words you remembered but they don't matter a jot--he sez "there you go..." rather than "that's it..." but what's fantastic is that Jerry plays off it perfectly.I still agree that is...

Having read through the thread before responding, I'll second all suggestions for Easy Wind, Two Souls in Communion and Operator.I'll also throw in Alligator (<i>hello!</i> people), Tastebud and Smokestack Lightning. Pigpen never died, he just stopped performing.

Well of course! Here it is: "...and he is right--you don't get much better than Pig talking to Jerry"Right? I couldn't agree more; you don't get any better--like you said above--for Pig bantering with Jerry during a jam, whether it was "there you go...play your guitar" or "that's it...play your guitar" (but, the TRUTH is, we could only find the exact quote from MH in 66, the one on the record, which was PRECISELY: "there you go...play your guitar"And...

to me Pig was the original leader of the band, all the while the fat man was its most important member.I think it's (SDH might be able to help with date) Avalon 69 during a Midnight Hour when Pig says "that's it, play your guitar" to Jer, one of my fav Pig moments

In all seriousness, as the kids are wont to put it these days, or "dead serious" or "deadly serious" or...Oh boy; what I mean to say is that it was a really nice thing for GoP to have done, to have made those CDs as a sonic tribute to PP, much less that he passed them on to various folks such as myself...I should have appreciated it more than I may have let on...Thanks again, you old windbag, GoP!BTW, he always thought the BEST HtoH, which no one has mentioned, was on 6...

I bicycle past the cemetery where Ron is laid almost every day, but haven't visited his grave in years. I swear I had the strangest impulse to go in there and pay my respects today. Now I know why.................

uggg . Strong competition (The Rascals, The Olympics), not strong"completion" (yeah yeah, I get it) . I need to blow my comments up to see better . I am a horrible speller, have poor, vision, poor typer, a uncoordinated klutz, a horrible proofreader . My shit's fucked up . Still I apologize for my continual gaffs . You will see more, no doubt .

I've got an LP of Pigpen called 'Bring me my shotgun' that sounds like he's trying out some acoustic material. Someone has taped it, and like most Dead material it has escaped. Time I gave it another listen.

Oh, sorry--they were literally, "ten CDs": CD # 1, CD, # 2, ...ahem?;PSorry again; what he did was to extract live recordings from early era concerts, that he deemed "best", and make CDs...Thus, we had ten GMLSGirls...all amazing; then, ten lovelights (I am making this up), and so on...all the best tunes, and because he was there, I believed him.Do you know I mean the poster hereabouts, long absent, known as "Ghost of Pig"? Before that, "Orchid Doctor",...
